TCF IRN French Nationality
Assessment and Certification
The TCF IRN comprises 4 compulsory tests assessing general French language skills:
Listening l comprehension: group test: 20 multiple-choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
Reading comprehension: Group test: 20 multiple-choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
Writing: group test: 3 exercises
Oral expression: Individual test face to face with an examiner: 3 exercises
The TCF IRN assesses exclusively language skills and not knowledge of French history, culture and society.
Oral comprehension, written comprehension and written expression are carried out in computer testing room in groups; oral expression is carried out in interview format with a face-to-face examiner.
The TCF results certificate for the IRN test is only valid in the context of an application for obtaining French nationality or a residence card, by marriage or by naturalization. The TCF IRN certificate cannot be used to enroll in a French university or to apply for immigration to Quebec or Canada.
